Redlands Doctors Join 250-Mile Bike Ride in the Fight Against Kidney Disease
Drs. Jay and Madhu Agarwal Gear Up for the Three-Day “Ride of a Lifetime”
Through New England DaVita Inc. (NYSE: DVA), a leading provider of kidney care services committed to improving the quality of life for those diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), today announced that Dr. Madhu Agarwal, an eye surgeon in town and local Redlands resident, and her husband Dr. Jay Agarwal, a local kidney specialist will ride to raise money for The Kidney TRUST in the 2011 Tour DaVita® bike ride through New England.
On Sept. 18, Drs. Agarwal will ride with Davita employees, family and friends riding a total of 250 miles over the course of three days.
The ride will kick-off in the mountains of Great Barrington, Mass., and end at the Atlantic Ocean in Madison, Conn. – all in the effort to raise awareness and funds in the fight against CKD. So far, Drs. Agarwal have raised well over $4000 to benefit the cause. A silent epidemic, CKD affects 31 million adult Americans, with more than 360,000 individuals suffering from kidney failure and currently on dialysis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognize CKD as a major public health problem that not only reduces the quality and length of life, but is also expensive to treat. “Tour DaVita is an opportunity for me to test my physical limits while at the same time raising funds for and awareness of an epidemic affecting one in six American adults,” says Dr. Madhu Agarwal. “Doing this ride is just one way of supporting the community, as so many Redlanders do. We are also very grateful to our patients and friends who were willing to contribute to the cause, says Dr. Jay Agarwal.
The participants’ individual fundraising combined with DaVita and other corporate sponsorships is expected to contribute more than $700,000 to The Kidney TRUST™, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working to prevent kidney disease through public education and awareness across the United States.
